AMPELOTHERAPY: FOR MANY BUT NOT FOR ALL

In ancient Greece the physician Galen recommended his patients to consume large quantities of ripe grapes.

The word ampelotherapy, in fact, comes from the Greek ampelos (vine) and means therapy with the fruits of the vine.

Practiced by the Romans and Arabs, it fell into disuse for a long time until, in the early 1900s, came into vogue as a symbol of luxury holiday by which the noble and wealthy, delighting themselves among hills and vineyards, tried to alleviate constipation, gout and hypertension. In the traditional version, ampelotherapy means feeding exclusively of grapes for a minimum of 2-3 up to a maximum of 21 days. You start with 500 to 600 g per day, in place of meals, to gradually reach 1-2 kg at the end of the first / second week.

But there are also softer versions – just one day a week - and partial alternatives where you replace only one meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) with about 300 g of very ripe grapes.

Actually no one would have to consume large quantities of grapes except under medical supervision.

There is a danger, in fact, that the blood sugar rises beyond measure. And for those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome there may be unpleasant consequences in the intestine.

Not to give up the undoubted benefits of this seasonal fruit, the secret is to consume some biological bunch of ripe grapes as a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack and chew it very slowly by crushing the seeds so that they can be ingested and you can benefit from their active ingredients.

Alternatively, you can drink the fresh juice of grapes, more tolerable for irritable bowels that don’t tolerate the fiber contained in the skin and seeds.

In any case, in order to prevent intestinal problems, the fruit of Bacchus should be always consumed between meals.

While, for its amount of fibers and sugars, ampelotherapy it is not recommended for those suffering from ulcers or heartburn, diabetics, those suffering from colitis and women in the menstrual period.
