Construction work begins on a luxurious holiday villa by the lake for a noble family from Bergamo: Count Frizzoni brings together leading architects from Northern Italy to meet his wife's every demand. Work finishes in 1854 and the villa is opened for the Countess's birthday.

When the First World War comes to an end, Arturo Bucher, grandson of the Swiss entrepreneur and luxury hotel pioneer Franz Josef Bucher, buys the Grand Hotel. With 150 members of staff, the hotel attracts increasingly prominent names to this beautiful oasis of peace.
